West End is Roatan’s village by the sea: one sandy road lined with dive shops, cafés, small hotels and bars, with Half Moon Bay curving at one end and boats bobbing over the reef just offshore. It’s the island’s social and diving hub, and home to its biggest expat community. It suits people who want to walk everywhere, divers, and investors looking at small rental businesses.
Living in West End
West End is the kind of place where you leave the car parked for days. Coffee, dinner, a dive, a sunset drink: it’s all on foot. The reef here is part of the Sandy Bay–West End marine reserve, and many dive sites are a few minutes from the village by boat, which is why so many dive operators set up shop along the waterfront. The Roatan Marine Park, the community nonprofit that patrols and protects this reef, was born here in 2005.
The village has a relaxed, slightly bohemian personality, with islanders, longtime expats, young dive instructors and travelers all sharing the same street. Evenings are lively, with live music on some nights, and in high season (roughly December to April) the place is busy. The trade-off for all that charm is that serious shopping isn’t here: for a full supermarket, banks and hospitals, residents drive to Coxen Hole or French Harbour.
Real estate in West End
West End is compact, and property reflects that. You’ll find small hotels and guesthouses, apartments and condos, village homes and, on the hills behind the road, houses with ocean views. Lots tend to be small, and waterfront parcels are rare and expensive. Prices sit toward the upper end for Roatan, generally below West Bay beachfront but above the quieter residential areas to the east.
For investors, the appeal is steady tourist traffic and a long rental season. If you’re looking at a business (a guesthouse, a café, a dive shop), check its operating permits, the real numbers behind the income, and exactly what’s included in the sale. Also ask about water, parking and access: on narrow village lots these matter more than you’d think.
Pros and cons
- Pro: truly walkable, with restaurants, bars, dive shops and the beach at your door.
- Pro: the island’s largest expat community, so it’s easy to meet people.
- Pro: a strong market for rentals and small tourism businesses.
- Pro: world-class diving minutes from shore.
- Con: noise and bustle, especially on the main road and on weekend nights.
- Con: small lots, little privacy in the village center, and limited parking.
- Con: no large supermarket or hospital; those are a 15–25 minute drive.
- Con: internet speed and power reliability can vary by street; check before you commit, especially if you work remotely.
Getting around
Times are rounded and depend on traffic:
- West Bay: about 10 minutes by car or water taxi.
- Sandy Bay: about 10 minutes.
- Airport and Coxen Hole: roughly 20–25 minutes.
- French Harbour: about 30–40 minutes.
- Camp Bay and the East End: at least an hour.
Shared taxis and colectivos run along the main road, so you can live here without a car, though most full-time residents eventually get one.
Is West End right for you?
If you picture yourself strolling to breakfast in flip-flops, diving before lunch and knowing the bartender by name, West End will feel like home. If you need quiet nights, a big yard or a garage for the boat, you’ll probably be happier in Sandy Bay or farther east, a short drive from the fun.
