French Harbour is Roatan’s working heart: a fishing town on the south shore with the island’s busiest commercial strip, and around it the quiet bays, hills and marinas of central Roatan. It’s less about postcards and more about everyday life done well. It suits full-time residents who want services close by, boat owners, and buyers looking for views and space for their money.
Living in French Harbour and central Roatan
French Harbour has long been home to one of the largest fishing fleets in the western Caribbean, and you still see it in the harbor: shrimp and lobster boats, fish plants, and families whose lives have followed the fishing seasons for generations. It’s a practical town. This is where islanders and residents come to shop, bank and run errands, with one of the island’s best-known supermarkets at the entrance to town, hardware stores, pharmacies, clinics and restaurants. Coxen Hole, with the main hospitals and government offices, is a short drive west.
The areas around town each have their own character. Dixon Cove wraps around a deep bay near the Mahogany Bay cruise port, with hills that offer some of the widest views on the island. Brick Bay and First Bight are calm bays with hillside homes and a residential feel. And Parrot Tree Plantation, on a peninsula between First and Second Bight, is a gated community with its own marina, beach and pool, popular with boat owners and buyers who value security and amenities.
Real estate in French Harbour and central Roatan
Central Roatan has the widest range on the island: hillside homes with ocean views, residential lots, waterfront homes with docks, condos and villas in gated communities, and marina properties where your boat can live next to your house. In general, prices are well below the west end for comparable views and land, while homes inside gated marina communities like Parrot Tree sit at the higher end of the local range because of their amenities and security.
If you’re buying in a gated community, read the HOA rules and fees, and ask what’s planned for the common areas. For a waterfront home, have the dock, seawall and any concessions checked, and confirm water depth if you plan to keep a boat.
Pros and cons
- Pro: the best access to supermarkets, banks, hardware stores and medical care.
- Pro: big views and more land for the money than in the west.
- Pro: protected bays and marinas, ideal for boat owners.
- Pro: a real, year-round community, not just a tourist season.
- Con: few swimming beaches of the West Bay kind; the south shore is more bays and docks than white sand.
- Con: the town itself is busy and industrial in places, with traffic around the main road.
- Con: lower vacation-rental demand than West Bay or West End.
- Con: you’ll need a car.
Getting around
Times are rounded and depend on traffic:
- Coxen Hole and the airport: about 15–20 minutes.
- West End and West Bay: about 30–45 minutes.
- Jonesville and Oak Ridge: about 20–30 minutes.
- Camp Bay: roughly 45 minutes to an hour.
Its central position is a real advantage: from here, both ends of the island are within reach.
Is French Harbour right for you?
If you want to live on the island full time, keep a boat, and have the supermarket, the hardware store and the doctor close by, central Roatan makes a lot of sense. You’ll drive to the famous beaches, but you’ll come home to a wider view, a quieter street and more house for your money.
